In the moments when you are still, you are receiving.

In the moments when you are still, you are listening.

In the stillness, you are relinquishing control.

In the stillness, you find rest.

From the beginning, it seems…when you read God’s story, He didn’t create us for 6 days of stillness and 1 day of work. In His image, it’s understandable that we actively apply our gifts, while trusting in His provision to get through each day as the days form into weeks and years. And yes, these bodies He gave us to handle our days are miraculous. But as we grow up into them we realize that we cannot go on indefinitely without the stillness of sleep. Then as we mature in our faith, we realize we cannot go on indefinitely without the stillness of prayer, or the restoration of peace. It would seem God created Sabbath in part to let us know that we are not who He is on our own. He is in true love with our need for Him.

In stillness, I believe is where God invites us to receive Him without any idea-generating on our part. To reconnect our tattered heartstrings to Him, and be refilled with His kind of grace.

Consider Psalm 46:10 which opens with “Be still and know that I am God.” This Psalm was inspired by a time when a mighty enemy army was threatening to destroy a nation. Their King, Hezekiah, was a Godly man: wise, busy, and I’m sure hard-working. However, when a superpower enemy surrounded his beloved nation, he chose only to trust in the Lord for their deliverance. Instead of their impending annihilation, a nation surrendered only to God witnessed the defeat of their attackers, by God alone. God Himself spoke to the heart of one who followed Him completely: “Be still, and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth.” (Psalm 46:10). He did what only God can do. And it’s good for us to remember, that when we are worn down we too can be easily attacked by the lies of an enemy power. Lies about incompetence, defeat, inability…enemies called cancer, heart disease, divorce, death, job loss.

Yet we serve a God who masters a grand plan, even when we are still. Psalm 107:29 tells us:

He stilled the storm to a whisper; the waves of the sea were hushed.

Can we do that without God? And isn’t is reassuring to know that Psalm 139:18 sings:

…When I awake, I am still with you.

Be still with God. Even if just for a small moment. Even if it’s, like the Proverbs 31 woman, because your getting up “while it is still dark” to provide food for your family. Be still a moment while packing that lunch.

And be glad that an Almighty and Ever-Loving God is in control.

Trying to “un-busy” along with you;
Lia

If your life was a letter to others, how would it read? God’s Word tells you, as a believer in His New Covenant, that your unveiled face reveals the power of the Holy Spirit. God’s not ashamed of you. He gave you everything, so that your life could be an invitation to His grace. Your crazy life, with all its faults and renewals, is enough to be a ministry.

I believe God wants to remind you, before you think you have to gather referrals, build a following, or accumulate degrees, that if you believe He sacrificed his only Son to save you, you have a hope worth sharing. It’s a light you own, that keeps lifting you back up again. And God knows it shines brightly enough to light the way for others. Just listen to His 2 Corinthians 3:3 love letter to you:

You show that you are a letter from Christ, the result of our ministry, written not with ink but with the Spirit of the living God, not on tablets of stone but on tablets of human hearts.

I like to think that although Paul was writing this letter to his Corinthian church, God intends it for you today. When He speaks of the “result of our ministry” it is a sweet and subtle reminder that God is with you in your Christian walk, always. This life is “ours” together with Him.

This section of scripture goes on to suggest that there is another “letter” that can be a barrier to your own letter. That is to say if we are hard-hearted and short-sighted, following only man-made rulings “to the letter”, we may miss being the love letter that is written every moment by the Spirit within us:

Such confidence as this is ours through Christ before God. Not that we are competent in ourselves to claim anything for ourselves, but our competence comes from God. He has made us competent as ministers of a new covenant—not of the letter but of the Spirit; for the letter kills, but the Spirit gives life. (2 Corinthians 3:4-6)

So, dear friends, be yourselves in Him. Be willing to share with someone that your imperfect life is lit from inside by sentiments God wants others to hear from regular you. You don’t have to be a fix-it wizard, or have the perfect answer. Just someone who comes alongside in the Spirit of Christ. Unafraid of others’ failings, willing to share the bearing of burdens. When you hug someone or take time to listen, it has a similar effect on their heart as having taken the time to write them a personal letter.

You are God’s letter. What an honor to live in that truth.

Writing it out with you,
Lia

Philippians 4:13 has spoken itself to me time and time again this season, as a multitude of believers are requesting this jewel of a verse be hand-stamped on their MTG pieces. What’s so awesome about its potential is that it invites a celebration of the glory revealed in our weakness, not our conquests. A pastor’s sermon I enjoyed during some research on Philippians 4:13 illuminated this: that in calling on the One who gives you strength to do all things, you are not boasting in self-confidence, but rejoicing in God-confidence. You are not in fact claiming “look at what I can do!” but rather, “Look at what God can do! For example, He overcame the shadow of death and proved it to us by the sacrificial and eternal love of His very own Son!” Philippians 4:13 releases our pride into the redemptive wonder that God’s strength gets your body moving each morning. His oxygen fuels your lungs, Jesus’ teachings and promises fill your heart. If you have another day on this side, thanks be to God. There’s something, that by His strength, He has for you to do…whether you “feel strong enough” or not. Give it to Him, and he’ll do all things good.
Grateful like you,
