I wonder sometimes if the reason God led me after all these years to design the Honey from Rock necklace is because decades ago I identified with Winnie the Pooh.

Maybe you did, too, or maybe your childhood muse is some entirely different sort. Overstuffed with good intentions as I start my day, I’ll wind up in a jam or two because I allow some good ole honey, or something sweet and tasty, to deter me from better options. Truth is, I conceivably have the entire Hundred Acre Wood gang galumphing around inside of me on any given day. Sometimes I’m the wise and retreating Owl who’d rather sleep. Often, I’m the wiry, hyper, adrenaline-driven Tigger getting on everyone’s last nerve. Other times, I’m nervously shying around behind a less-worried friend, looking for a hand to hold, like Piglet. On good days, I’m there for everyone else, like Christopher, just understanding. On my best days? I’m myself, the way God made me. And so are you.

And do you know why I know that this is so? Because of a broken old sign in a make-believe world that greatly resembles reality. It suggests “Trespassers Will.”

Now Piglet fabricated that “Trespassers Will” was his grandfather’s name, or names, actually…in case he lost one. Being that Piglet was the creative type. Being the less-innocent type, however, we fill in the blanks that Trespassers Will Be Prosecuted.

When I was a child, I stood by that mysterious sign blankly. Wondering what will. I still remember receiving the enlightenment from my mom. It’s one of countless reasons I believe God creates people besides ourselves: to remind each other. My mom explained how “trespassers will” completes itself in unbroken form. She was there to follow up, and ease my terror as I imagined unwitting hikers being persecuted for simply drifting along, kicking pinecones. She was there to explain the difference between walking onto someone’s land, or being deeply sinful in causing someone pain. She assured me…no persecution was imminent on any of my nature-walks. My heart wanders to wonder, though, if the absence of the properly-spelled remainder of that signpost was the author’s intent: to heighten and magnify our perpetual state of confusion over the core purpose of either prosecution or persecution, or how one may lead to another.

Indeed, as much as parents can speak protection over their children, and as much as God can speak His Word over our lives….Trespassers Will. It’s one of the many rocks we come up against in life. On kinder days, it’s one of the many tight places we get stuck in when we go where we might shouldn’t have. Yet His promise remains: “With honey from the rock I would satisfy you” (Psalm 81:16). And as He taught us to pray through those rocky times, we first ask that our very own trespassing be forgiven. In the same way that we forgive those who trespass. Because trespassers like us? We will. And, thank you Jesus, where there’s a will there’s a Way to freedom. Sometimes it’s being stuck in that rock a while, just think, think, thinking on His presence in your life that is the true, sweet honey that satisfies the deepest longing in your soul.

When I discovered a gorgeous essay on this “Honey from Rock” psalm in Warren Wiersbe’s uplifting book The Bumps Are What You Climb On, I fell in love with the concept he unearthed. It’s a perspective as original as Genesis; as tender as childhood:

We get in a fix.
We fix our eyes on the true Rock.
And honey, what a sweet deliverer.

Your friend,

Recently, in a powerful sermon delivered by Pastor David Dwight of Hope Church, our sacred, yet seemingly helpless babe born in a manger was remarkably revealed as an incomparable warrior, sent in to win. David illustrated that when the heavenly announcement began to shepherds in the field, those shepherds were not just surprised by a sweet angel with gossamer wings. They were face-down terrified. By a heavenly “host” of divinity sent to proclaim bloodshed.

In fact, David clarified that the “host” is literally translated as an “army.” Which illuminates what Jesus’ birth confirmed: This means war. War on everything that binds you. War on everything that enslaves you, tempts you, addicts you, weakens your resolve, dilutes your faith, steals your hope.

The best news of all is that after the battles are waged, the proof of victory resides in the resurrection. You see, this war is not won in worldly ways, numbering lives lost. It is won by saving them.

Jesus lived a human life. He died an excruciating death. He took on all sins — yours and mine. He performed the perfect calling for His beloved…to show us why we celebrate the joy of Easter. To complete the gift of a savior child, He demonstrated eternal life with the Father of Creation, the giver of life. It’s our Easter hope worth holding on to. Worth sharing in so many words from the Bible.

As I look out over the back yard now, I see cardinals, buds, dew, pollen, tender bulb-shoots…proof. That God can take what seems to be dead, and bring it back to glorious life. When you search His Word for what He wants you to know, He is telling you the most uplifting love story you could ever offer to anyone in need of hope. And He shows us He can do it, not just in the Bible, but every day all around us.

Why not choose your favorite scripture address, a verse that ignites your heart, and let me hand-stamp it on a bracelet for your wrist that reaches out to hold someone else’s hand. On a necklace you wear close to your heart as an invitation to divine conversation. On earrings that join in the radiance shining through your eyes.

Some wonderful verses that tell the story of Easter hope are:

1 Peter 1:3
Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! In his great mercy he has given us new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead…

1 Corinthians 15:57
But thanks be to God! He gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.

John 11:25
Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life. The one who believes in me will live, even though they die…

Hebrews 7:24-25
…but because Jesus lives forever, he has a permanent priesthood. Therefore he is able to save completely those who come to God through him, because he always lives to intercede for them.

Romans 10:9
If you declare with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.

The possibilities are as boundless as the truth. So what’s your Easter verse?
I pray your share it, boldly, joyfully with your little part of His Kingdom he sent you to uplift.

Have a glorious Spring!
In His Love,
Lia

Why pray? Have you ever asked yourself this in the midst of the pain, loss and confusion of this world? You ask, seek, knock (Matthew 7:7) and still don’t find the doors you want opening. Your requests are still not being answered in the way you pray them. Then again, a journey of faith, I’m convinced, will undoubtedly be woven with unexpected, miraculous signs of God’s steadfastness. His seemingly irrational timing. Evidence of His perfect plan.

I believe this is why we’re invited in Philippians 4:6 to “not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God.”

God knows this world can make you anxious. But as he clarifies in John 16:33 (…In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world) and in 1 John 4:4 (…the one who is in you is greater than the one who is in the world), God has made a way to align your heart and soul with a grander plan. To turn away from and release the problems of this life into His continual renewal. To pray.

As you travel through God’s story, you find a host of faithful on their knees, praying. Abraham prayed. Isaac, Jacob, Moses, Samson, Hannah, David, Solomon, Elisha, Hezekiah, Ezra, Nehemiah…even Job. They all sought the power and presence of the Lord through prayer. There are even times when it describes the Lord being moved and affected by prayer, and answering. Further, God knows best the one who is after us, to deter us from seeking God’s greater plan. Which is why He gifted us with a “way” to pray through Jesus. God came into our midst, speaking a divine framework within which to participate in His kingdom work. Matthew 6:9-13 tells us:

This, then, is how you should pray:
Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name,
your kingdom come, your will be done,
on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us today our daily bread.
And forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors.
And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one.

There is no promise here that we can be God. That we can manipulate God. That we know better than God. That even though Jesus commanded a fig tree to wither and then turned to his followers proclaiming “whatever you ask for in prayer, believe that you have received it, and it will be yours.” (Mark 11:24), we are to ignore all His other teachings about prayer.

Yes, by His power, and by His name, we are given miraculous abilities, and a faith that can move a mountain of problems that distract us from God’s will. But we are not granted the omniscience or omnipotence to chart God’s future. He is still in charge, and His ideas still surpass our own. When we pray, we are free to believe that God can do what we ask. We don’t know, however, if what we’re commanding is best for all. We live by faith. I’m going to go out on a limb and even suggest that we are not as faithful, not as doubtless, in our confidence as Jesus. And God understands that. It doesn’t mean miracles are impossible.

In 1 Chronicles 5:20, God answers prayers “because they trusted in him.” In 2 Chronicles 7:14, he answers prayer because His people “humbled themselves” and “turned from their ways.”

In Psalm 69:13 we see a prayer for salvation. Throughout the prayers in God’s story we see requests to “uphold our cause,” “strengthen my hands,” “forgive me.” We see that prayer is pure of evil, greed, vengeance, withdrawal, lust, selfishness and unwelcome motives, because God is for us, and we know not what is best. Only He does, and in His hands, aligned with His design, we are set free from the problems of this world.

This is why I’m thinking it’s a stretch to simply pray to regrow a lost limb or to extend a life beyond what God is doing. You see, He is unchanging in His good will for us. His will is the one we want done. Even if we can’t hold on to a loved one indefinitely, erase a handicap, or prevent a disease. Because death factors in to the plan He wrote.

But then His only son rose again, to prove His future promise of eternal life. If we pray to hold on to the things we want on this side, do we believe in a resurrection to a New Earth? Do we believe?

Let’s pray for God’s will to be done. And let’s pray continually (1 Thessalonians 5:17). Prayer allows you to empty yourself of your anxiety, and fill yourself with Him. It brings you back in tune with His purpose for you.

You see, we have His Word. Just look near the end, and you will find:

“He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away.” He who was seated on the throne said, “I am making everything new!” Then he said, “Write this down, for these words are trustworthy and true.” (Revelation 21:4-5)

Keep reading your Bible, and pray it back to Him. He will always be the One to manifest peace in your life in the midst of any circumstance, in His perfect way, in His perfect timing. I believe He wants you, He hears your prayers, and He knows ways to answer them beyond your wildest dreams.

On my knees with you,
Lia

In the moments when you are still, you are receiving.

In the moments when you are still, you are listening.

In the stillness, you are relinquishing control.

In the stillness, you find rest.

From the beginning, it seems…when you read God’s story, He didn’t create us for 6 days of stillness and 1 day of work. In His image, it’s understandable that we actively apply our gifts, while trusting in His provision to get through each day as the days form into weeks and years. And yes, these bodies He gave us to handle our days are miraculous. But as we grow up into them we realize that we cannot go on indefinitely without the stillness of sleep. Then as we mature in our faith, we realize we cannot go on indefinitely without the stillness of prayer, or the restoration of peace. It would seem God created Sabbath in part to let us know that we are not who He is on our own. He is in true love with our need for Him.

In stillness, I believe is where God invites us to receive Him without any idea-generating on our part. To reconnect our tattered heartstrings to Him, and be refilled with His kind of grace.

Consider Psalm 46:10 which opens with “Be still and know that I am God.” This Psalm was inspired by a time when a mighty enemy army was threatening to destroy a nation. Their King, Hezekiah, was a Godly man: wise, busy, and I’m sure hard-working. However, when a superpower enemy surrounded his beloved nation, he chose only to trust in the Lord for their deliverance. Instead of their impending annihilation, a nation surrendered only to God witnessed the defeat of their attackers, by God alone. God Himself spoke to the heart of one who followed Him completely: “Be still, and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth.” (Psalm 46:10). He did what only God can do. And it’s good for us to remember, that when we are worn down we too can be easily attacked by the lies of an enemy power. Lies about incompetence, defeat, inability…enemies called cancer, heart disease, divorce, death, job loss.

Yet we serve a God who masters a grand plan, even when we are still. Psalm 107:29 tells us:

He stilled the storm to a whisper; the waves of the sea were hushed.

Can we do that without God? And isn’t is reassuring to know that Psalm 139:18 sings:

…When I awake, I am still with you.

Be still with God. Even if just for a small moment. Even if it’s, like the Proverbs 31 woman, because your getting up “while it is still dark” to provide food for your family. Be still a moment while packing that lunch.

And be glad that an Almighty and Ever-Loving God is in control.

Trying to “un-busy” along with you;
Lia

or the refreshing Matthew 6:28-29:
And why do you worry about clothes? See how the lilies of the field grow. They do not labor or spin. Yet I tell you that not even Solomon in all his splendor was dressed like one of these.

or the powerful seed-potential of Mark 4:30-32:
Again he said, “What shall we say the kingdom of God is like, or what parable shall we use to describe it? It is like a mustard seed, which is the smallest seed you plant in the ground. Yet when planted, it grows and becomes the largest of all garden plants, with such big branches that the birds of the air can perch in its shade.
